Altitude Sickness Risk

Heading to Aspen, Breckenridge, Jackson Hole, or another high-altitude destination? Check your risk level and get practical acclimatization advice.

High risk

9,600 ft elevation · 2,926 m above sea level

Acclimatization tips

1.

Plan a gradual ascent if possible — spend a night at a lower elevation before heading up.

2.

Give yourself 1–2 days of easy activity before exerting yourself. AMS symptoms can appear the next morning.

3.

Know the signs of serious altitude illness: severe headache, vomiting, loss of coordination, confusion. Descend immediately if these occur.

4.

Talk to your doctor before the trip about Acetazolamide (Diamox) — especially if you've had AMS before.

5.

Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and heavy meals for the first 48 hours.

This is general information only — not medical advice. Consult your physician before traveling to high-altitude destinations, especially if you have heart, lung, or blood conditions.
