Two days in one of Michigan's most interesting small cities — the Kerrytown Farmers Market, the full Zingerman's orbit, Detroit Street Filling Station, and North Star Lounge. Time it for the Art Fair in July and the city transforms.
Start at the Farmers Market, eat through Kerrytown, hit Zingerman's Deli for lunch, walk the University of Michigan Diag in the afternoon.
One of the best urban farmers markets in Michigan — open year-round on Wednesdays (7am–3pm) and Saturdays (7am–3pm) in the Kerrytown Market building and adjacent outdoor stalls. Local produce, maple syrup, goat cheese, fresh mushrooms, Michigan honey, and a rotating cast of prepared food vendors. The Saturday market is significantly larger. The indoor Kerrytown Market hall next door has specialty food shops, a cheese counter, a coffee stand, and independent boutiques — plan an hour minimum.
The flagship of the Zingerman's Community of Businesses and one of the most famous delis in America. Pastrami, corned beef, and Reuben sandwiches on house-baked rye. The sandwiches are large and the prices reflect it ($18–22), but the quality is legitimate. The cheese and specialty food retail section is worth browsing. Expect a line — it moves faster than it looks. The staff know the products deeply and will give you samples without being asked.
Down the block from the Deli — a small-batch candy and confection shop with peanut brittle, marshmallows, caramels, and seasonal chocolate bars made on-site. The peanut brittle is the thing to buy. They do factory tours occasionally; check the website. Good for a small gift or self-indulgent snacking.
The Ann Arbor Art Fair transforms the city in July. Outside of fair season, fill the morning with Zingerman's Coffee and a cooking class, then catch live music at North Star Lounge in the evening.
Zingerman's has a dedicated coffee roastery and café on Plaza Drive — away from the tourist-heavy Detroit Street strip, but worth the short drive. Single-origin roasts, excellent espresso, knowledgeable baristas. Good for a morning stop before exploring.
One of the largest juried outdoor art fairs in the country — four separate fairs running simultaneously across 30+ blocks of downtown Ann Arbor for four days in late July. Over 500,000 people attend. The quality of work is genuinely high; it's not a craft market. Food, live music, and street food round it out. The streets close to traffic and the city pedestrianizes completely. If you're visiting in July, time your trip around the fair — if you're not, avoid the third week of July.
Ann Arbor's best live music bar — eclectic in the truest sense, with jazz, funk, soul, blues, indie, and experimental acts on the same calendar. Small room, good sightlines, cheap drinks. The booking is serious and the crowd comes for the music. Check their calendar before you go; it's a different experience depending on what's on. Late evenings only.
