Three days in one of the Americas' best-preserved colonial cities — volcanic ruins, the famous yellow arch, excellent coffee, and an optional volcano hike on day two.
Antigua's most photographed spot — the yellow arch framing Volcán de Agua behind it. Best light is morning. Parque Central is the social hub; the fountain and cathedral are both worth a look.
Antigua is surrounded by some of Guatemala's best coffee farms. Fernando's sources from local fincas and the pourover here is excellent.
12-seat restaurant run by a former Guatemala City chef. The menu is short and changes daily — whatever he's cooking is the right answer. Reserve days in advance.
Bring layers — it's cold near the summit even in dry season. Wear shoes you don't care about. The volcanic ash clings to everything. Horse rental (optional) for the steep last section is about 80 GTQ.
One of Guatemala's most active volcanoes and one of the most accessible. The hike from the park entrance takes about 90 minutes each way. A guide (required, ~100 GTQ/12 USD) will take you close to active lava flows on good days. Depart Antigua by 7 AM for the full experience.
One of the largest indigenous markets in Central America, operating Thursdays and Sundays. The 90-minute shuttle from Antigua (book at any travel agency, ~100 GTQ each way) drops you at the market entrance. Textiles, jade, incense, and Mayan ceremonial items.
Back in Antigua by mid-afternoon. Grab a bowl of pepián — Guatemala's national stew of roasted seeds, dried chiles, and chicken — at any traditional comedor near the market.
