Catalonia, Spain
Barcelona is the rare city that has everything: a Gothic medieval quarter older than Columbus, the most original architectural tradition in the world (Gaudí's Modernisme — not a tourist marketing phrase, a genuine revolution in form), one of Europe's most dynamic food cultures, and a beach. The Sagrada Família is under permanent construction and genuinely worth however long the queue is. The Eixample neighborhood's grid (Ildefons Cerdà's 1859 plan, still radical) is walkable design theory made real. La Boqueria is the famous market but Mercat de Santa Caterina (less famous, better) is the local one. The sea is 20 minutes from anywhere. Walk the Gràcia neighborhood at night for the Barcelona that Barcelonans actually live in.

El Prat Airport (BCN) is 12km from the city — the Aerobús coach (35 min, €6.75) connects to Plaça Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia; the L9 Metro (35 min, €5.15) also runs from both terminals. A taxi is €30–35 for the fixed fare. The Metro (L1–L12) covers all major areas; a T-Casual card (10 trips, €11.35) is the best value for a short stay. BCN card includes unlimited Metro if you plan heavy transit use. Walking covers most of the old city — the Gothic Quarter, El Born, and La Barceloneta are walkable from each other. Gaudí's buildings in the Eixample are 20–30 min walk from the Gothic Quarter or 2 Metro stops. Book Sagrada Família and Park Güell timed entries online — both sell out weeks ahead in summer. July–August is hot (35°C+) and peak-crowded; May, June, September are the best balance of weather and manageable crowds.
