Five days to do Cleveland properly — world-class museum district, Cuyahoga Valley National Park day trip, West Side Market deep dive, the full East 4th restaurant corridor, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Land, check in, walk Ohio City. The neighborhood around West Side Market is the most interesting pedestrian zone in Cleveland — independent restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and a genuine neighborhood feel.
The best first-night stop in Ohio City — Jewish-style deli with house-cured meats, excellent rye bread, and a menu that leans into what delis do well. The chopped liver toast and the pastrami are the anchors.
Ohio's original craft brewery, founded 1988. The Dortmunder Gold is the year-round workhorse. If it's fall, the Christmas Ale is in rotation and causes shortages for good reason. The brewpub patio on Market Ave is excellent in good weather.
The lakefront cluster — Rock Hall, Great Lakes Science Center, and the Voinovich Bicentennial Park — makes up one of the better waterfront museum corridors in the Midwest.
Two to three hours depending on how far down the rabbit hole you go. The permanent collection covers the full arc of American popular music with actual depth. The rotating exhibitions are typically strong. The I.M. Pei building on the lakefront is a strong architectural statement.
Michael Symon's flagship — roasted bone marrow, braised pork cheeks, a wine list curated by someone who actually knows wine. Still the best table in downtown Cleveland after 20+ years.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is 20 minutes south of downtown Cleveland and people who live here regularly don't know how good it is. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is the best way to experience it — running 25 miles through the valley with stops at trailheads.
The CVSR runs 25 miles through Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Independence and Akron. The train stops at trailheads — you can hop off, hike, and catch the next train. The Brandywine Falls stop is mandatory. The falls (65-foot drop) are stunning and the access trail is easy. Round-trip ticket lets you ride the full route both ways.
University Circle in the morning — Cleveland Museum of Art is the anchor. Tremont in the evening for the restaurant scene.
Free general admission. If you skipped it earlier, go now and give it the time it deserves. The Raphael, the Caravaggio, the Turner, the full Asian art wing, the armor gallery. The ArtLens app connects to real-time visitor tracking and lets you explore the full collection of 45,000+ objects.
Cleveland's best Japanese-American restaurant — serious sushi, exceptional sake, modern plates that use Ohio ingredients with Japanese technique. The omakase direction is the move if you trust the kitchen.
Final morning at West Side Market, load up on pierogies and smoked meats, and head out via the Metroparks if you have time.
The definitive Cleveland market experience. Pierogies from the Polish vendors, stuffed cabbage, smoked meats, Lebanese pastries, fresh bread. Eat your way through the prepared food vendors before you load the car.
The Cleveland Orchestra is widely considered one of the five best orchestras in the world. Severance Music Center (University Circle) is a 1931 landmark and an acoustically superb hall. If any visit at all overlaps with a performance date, go. Tickets start around $30 and the experience is world-class. Check clevelandorchestra.com.
