Two days in Detroit done right — Michigan Central Station, the DIA, Ima, Eastern Market on Saturday, the Charles H. Wright Museum, and Cold Truth. The city will surprise you.
Michigan Central Station in the morning, the DIA in the afternoon, Ima for dinner. Three things that will reset what you think about Detroit.
One of the best restaurants in Detroit, full stop. Japanese-inspired noodle dishes — the mazemen (brothless) and the spicy sesame are the signatures. The space is small and minimalist, the food is precise and satisfying, and the prices are fair for the quality. No reservations — arrive when they open (5pm) or plan for a 30–45 minute wait on weekends. Multiple locations; the original is in the New Center area.
Ford's $950 million restoration of the 1913 Beaux-Arts train station is the most dramatic building project in recent American history. The station sat abandoned for 30 years after Amtrak left in 1988; Ford purchased it in 2018 and reopened it in 2024. The main hall's barrel-vault ceiling and grand arcade are intact and restored. The ground floor and public event spaces are open to visitors; the upper floors are Ford offices and tech workspace. The Corktown neighborhood surrounding it has become Detroit's best restaurant district — Green Dot Stables (sliders), Batch Brewing, and Ottava Via are all within a few blocks. Plan 90 minutes for the station and neighborhood.
Saturday at Eastern Market is the most local thing you can do in Detroit. Spend the morning there, hit the Charles H. Wright Museum in the afternoon, and end with Cold Truth.
The largest historic public market district in the United States, operating since 1891. Saturday is the big day — farmers, vendors, fishmongers, flower sellers, and food stalls fill six market sheds from 6am to 3pm. It is not a tourist market; it is the actual produce and food supply for a significant portion of Detroit. The permanent vendor buildings around the sheds have specialty food shops, butchers, cheese counters, and the best bakeries in the city. Go Saturday. Do not go any other day expecting the same experience.
Detroit's best ice cream shop, and it happens to be completely plant-based. The flavors rotate seasonally and are genuinely creative — expect things like Thai tea, black sesame, sweet corn, and hibiscus alongside the accessible standards. Dense, creamy texture from cashew and coconut bases. Small shop; weekend lines form but move fast. Worth building your afternoon around.
The largest institution dedicated to African American history and culture in the world. The permanent exhibition — And Still We Rise — covers 400 years of African American history with depth and rigor rarely found in any museum. The artifact collection, oral history recordings, and primary-source documents are extraordinary. Plan a full 2–3 hours; this is not a quick walk-through. $15 adult admission.
