Michigan, United States
Downriver is a belt of working-class communities south of Detroit along the Detroit River and western Lake Erie shore — Wyandotte, Woodhaven, Brownstown, Flat Rock, Riverview, Trenton, Monroe, and a dozen more. It is not a traditional tourist destination, which is kind of the point. Uncle Sam Jam in Woodhaven is one of Michigan's great free Fourth of July celebrations — multiple stages of live music, food vendors, and fireworks over the city. Wyandotte's Biddle Avenue has developed a legitimate independent restaurant and bar scene, and the city hosts art and craft fairs through the summer. Lake Erie Metropark is one of the cleanest freshwater beaches in the region. The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak and Michigan Central Station in Corktown are 20–30 minutes north — day trips that round out a Downriver weekend.
