Arrive and settle in Gatlinburg

Check in to a cabin above the strip — the elevated ones have better views and less traffic noise. Walk the strip in the evening for the full Gatlinburg experience.

GSMNP requires free timed entry permits for Cades Cove and the Sugarlands area during peak season. Reserve at recreation.gov as soon as your dates are set.

Alum Cave Trail day

The best hike in the Smokies for most visitors. Alum Cave Bluffs is 4.4 miles round trip; continuing to Mount LeConte is 11 miles. Start before 8am to beat parking.

Morning Excursion

Alum Cave Bluffs to LeConte

The trail passes Arch Rock, Alum Cave, and the Eye of the Needle before the summit. Early morning often means cloud inversions below. One of the most dramatic hikes in the Eastern US.

Cades Cove wildlife loop

The 11-mile one-way loop opens at sunrise. Deer, black bear, wild turkey, and occasional elk sightings. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are bike-only (no cars) until 10am.

Abrams Falls from Cades Cove

2.5 miles round trip off the loop road. The falls drop 20 feet into a deep pool — one of the best waterfall hikes in the park. Slippery rocks near the base.

Hot Springs day trip and departure

Hot Springs, NC is 65 miles east on US-25. Natural hot spring baths on the French Broad River. Soak for 90 minutes, grab lunch in town, then drive home.
