Three days — Meijer Gardens, the Heritage Hill walking tour, dinner at a James Beard restaurant, and a day on Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Heritage Hill is one of the best preserved Victorian neighborhoods in the Midwest — 1,300+ historic homes on the hill east of downtown. The walking tour map is at the visitor center.
Charcuterie and craft cocktails in a converted butcher shop on Cherry Street. The house-made salumi, the smashed burger, and the Old Fashioned are the orders. Intimate space, 6 PM reservation is the right call.
The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in the park requires a $35 vehicle pass (annual, covers all national parks). The dune climb is free. Arrive early on summer weekends — the parking lot at the dune climb fills by 10 AM.
Historic grande-dame hotel in downtown with a river view. The Tower rooms have the best views. Walk to Founders, GRAM, and the restaurants. Rates $150–280/night.
The 2-hour drive north to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is the best day trip from Grand Rapids. The dune climb is 100–200 feet of pure sand — 15 minutes up, 3 minutes down. The view from the top over Lake Michigan is genuine. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive covers the highlights in 2 hours.
