Four days hopping between the lake's distinct villages by boat — Panajachel as base, San Juan La Laguna for art cooperatives, Santiago Atitlán for Mayan culture, and San Marcos for the sunset.
Shuttle from Antigua to Panajachel is 150 GTQ (20 USD) and takes about 3 hours. Book through any Antigua travel agency. Private transfers also available for 4–6 people at similar per-head cost.
Calle Santander leads straight to the main dock. Grab a plastic chair at one of the lakeside comedores and watch the sun drop behind the volcanoes. The three surrounding peaks — Atitlán, Tolimán, and San Pedro — turn gold-pink.
A 20-minute lanchacha from Panajachel. San Juan has several community art and weaving cooperatives — the natural dye workshop at Lema is fascinating. Buy directly, it goes entirely to the women's collective.
The next village along. San Pedro has Atitlán's youngest vibe — language schools, backpackers, and good coffee. Hike up to the Indian Nose viewpoint (1.5 hours) for the aerial view over the lake.
The largest village on the lake and the most traditionally Mayan. The must-visit is Maximón — a Mayan deity represented by a dressed effigy who moves between local homes throughout the year. A local kid will guide you for a small tip.
The 45-minute boat back to Panajachel runs with Volcán Atitlán directly ahead the whole way. Sit on the front of the boat.
Several operators in San Marcos rent kayaks by the hour. Paddling away from shore gives you the full 360° view of the volcanoes — it's one of those views that genuinely stops you.
Probably the best restaurant on the lake — farm-to-table with produce grown on the hillside above. The mole is outstanding.
