Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is the Western European capital that most people discover and immediately start planning their return trip to. Seven hills, 800 years of Moorish and Portuguese history visible in every neighborhood, the best tiled building facades in the world (azulejo tile art that covers entire church and palace exteriors), and a food culture that produces the best pastéis de nata in the world at the source. The Alfama district — the medieval Moorish quarter that survived the 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the city — is the home of fado, Portugal's singular melancholic music form. The Belém district has the two monuments that anchor the Age of Discovery: the Torre de Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery. Lisbon is also still relatively affordable by Western European standards — a three-course dinner with wine can run €20–30 in most neighborhoods outside the tourist core.

Alfama (Moorish quarter / fado) · Baixa (downtown grid / Pombaline) · Chiado / Bairro Alto (arts / nightlife) · Belém (monuments / pastéis) · LX Factory / Alcântara · Mouraria · Intendente / Arroios · Sintra (day trip, 40 min by train)
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is 7 km north of the city center — Metro Red Line (20 min, €1.80) runs direct to Alameda where you change to the Green Line for Baixa/Chiado; taxis/Uber from LIS are €10–18. The Carris tram, bus, and Metro system covers the city; a 24-hour Viva Viagem card (€6.60 loaded with €5 credit) is the best value. The famous Tram 28 runs through Alfama and Estrela — beautiful but consistently overcrowded with tourists; take it once for the experience or walk instead. The city is hilly in ways that surprise visitors — the miradouros (hilltop viewpoints) require climbing but reward with exceptional views. Sintra is 40 min by train from Rossio station (€2.35) and worth a day trip for the fairy-tale palaces. Book Jerónimos Monastery timed entry online.
