England, United Kingdom
London is one of those cities that refuses to be reduced to a highlight reel. The free world-class museums alone — British Museum, V&A, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery — would justify a week. Layer in the pubs (not a cliché, an actual culture), the market food scene, the sheer density of history per square mile, and a parks system that makes you forget you're in a city of nine million people, and you have a destination that rewards both first-timers doing the circuit and regulars finding new neighborhoods every visit. The trick is to treat the Thames as your organizing axis: most of what matters is either on it or a short walk from it. The Tube is excellent; use it, but walk more than you think you need to — the between-stops streets are often better than the destinations.

Heathrow (LHR) is the main gateway — 45–60 min by Piccadilly line Tube into central London for £6.70. Do not take a black cab from the airport; it's £55–80 for a trip you can do for £7. Gatwick (LGW) connects via the Gatwick Express (30 min, £20) or Southern/Thameslink trains (35–45 min, £10–15). Once in the city, get an Oyster card or use contactless — the same fare cap applies to both. The daily cap on Zones 1–2 is £8.10; you cannot overpay for Tube rides in a single day. Taxis (black cabs and Uber) are expensive but plentiful. Walking is frequently faster than the Tube for trips under a mile.
