Take the late morning ferry to arrive before the day-trippers thin out. Check in, then start with a carriage tour to orient before switching to bikes.
Book the private 1-hour tour at the carriage stand near the dock. Your driver narrates the island's history and takes you past the East Bluff Victorian cottages, the fort, and along ridgelines with Straits views. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours is the main operator. Worth every dollar on a romantic trip.
The most reliable dinner option that isn't Grand Hotel-priced. The whitefish and perch are the right call here. Make a reservation — seating is limited in peak summer.
West Bluff Road is lined with Victorian summer estates on a ridge above the Straits. Walk or bike it around 7:30pm in summer — the light turns the Mackinac Bridge gold and the water goes flat. The most photogenic 30-minute window on the island.
Either Arnold Line or Shepler's Ferry — both are 15 minutes and equally good. Book round-trip tickets in advance in summer. The Mackinac Bridge is visible from the bow for the first few minutes of the crossing.
A slower morning. Build it around the Grand Hotel afternoon tea before catching the late afternoon ferry.
Open to non-guests — a proper tea service in the parlor with finger sandwiches, scones, and a selection of teas. The 660-foot porch overlooking the Straits makes the setting. Around –55/person. Book 24 hours ahead in peak season.
Every fudge shop on Main Street is within a 5-minute walk of the dock. Buy it last, right before you board — it stays fresh 2–3 days. Murdick's (original), Ryba's, and Joann's are all excellent. One box from each to compare.
