Founded in 1755 and sitting directly beside the Prado, Madrid's Royal Botanical Garden packs roughly 5,000 plant species from around the world into a compact, walkable 8 hectares — terraced beds, a rose garden, and a 19th-century glass Exhibition Pavilion. It's a fraction of the crowd of the Prado next door and a good, calm way to start a day at half the pace of the rest of the trip. General admission is about €6.
Open since 1943 in the heart of Lavapiés, this is the market Madrileños actually shop at — produce stalls, a butcher, a fishmonger, and a handful of small kitchen counters selling everything from Venezuelan arepas to Spanish tortilla, reflecting the neighborhood's status as the city's most multicultural. It's the un-touristy counterpart to Mercado de San Miguel, a few metro stops and a world away in atmosphere.
Lavapiés has one of Madrid's best concentrations of independent, low-key bars and international restaurants — a good neighborhood to just wander and pick somewhere rather than pre-booking. It's also one of the least expensive central neighborhoods to eat well in.

A combined zoo, aquarium, and dolphinarium in Casa de Campo — one of the largest collections of its kind in Europe, with a walk-through shark tunnel, a koala exhibit (one of the few in Europe), and a dolphin show included with admission. It's a full afternoon on its own if you take it slowly. General admission runs around €25; buying online in advance is cheaper than the gate price.

An 18th-century basilica with one of the largest domes in the Christian world at 33 meters across, rivaling St. Peter's in Rome in scale if not fame. The interior chapels were decorated by, among others, a young Goya. It's one of the least-visited major sights in central Madrid, which makes for an unhurried look at a genuinely significant building. Admission (including the small museum) is about €5.
Madrid is landlocked, so the closest thing to a beach day is a rooftop pool with a skyline view. The Hotel Emperador's rooftop pool on Gran Vía sells day passes to non-guests in the warmer months and looks straight down the avenue — sunbeds, a bar, and genuinely one of the best views in the city. Book ahead in summer; day passes run roughly €30–40 depending on the day.
Retiro Park's rose garden, La Rosaleda, holds around 4,000 rose bushes across dozens of varieties and is at its best in late spring, though it's a pleasant, quiet close to any evening. Enter from the Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo side to avoid the busier main paths near the lake.
