Three days — poolside at a mid-century inn, Joshua Tree sunset, a private architecture tour, and the kind of spa day Palm Springs was built for.
Palm Springs does not reward ambition on the first afternoon. Check in, find the pool, order drinks. The light on the San Jacinto Mountains at sunset is what you came for.
The Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage — former retreat for every president from Eisenhower to Obama. The 25,000-square-foot house and 9-acre garden are stunning. Timed-entry tours sell out weeks in advance. Reserve immediately.
Joshua Tree, Sunnylands, and most of the interesting hiking require a car. The downtown strip is walkable. Uber is available but sparse outside the main tourist zone. Rent a convertible — the Cahuilla Hills Road views justify it.
Jonathan Adler-designed resort that feels like a movie set from the 1960s — canary yellow furniture, giant painted murals, a croquet lawn. The pool situation is the best in the city. Rates $350–600/night.
A Palm Springs institution since 1978 — Sinatra ate here, and the Rat Pack energy is preserved. Live piano bar, classic American steakhouse, and a martini made correctly. The Caesar salad is tableside. Go for the nostalgia as much as the food.
Drive 45 minutes to Joshua Tree National Park — enter through the north entrance at Twentynine Palms. The Hidden Valley loop at sunset is the right choice. The Joshua trees look completely different in evening light. Stay for 30 minutes after sunset for stars — zero light pollution.
The Parker's spa is the best in Palm Springs — the couples suite has a private soaking tub and outdoor area. Book the 3-hour couples experience. The indoor-outdoor flow is designed for the desert climate.
Best restaurant for a final dinner — farm-to-table in a converted bank space. The wood-fired flatbreads and the seasonal vegetable dishes are consistently excellent. Lower-key than Melvyn's, better food.
Palm Springs hotels compete on pool design as much as rooms. The Ace Hotel (fire pits, ping pong, hipster crowd), The Saguaro (color-blocked, party-focused), and The Parker (best overall) have the most distinct pool cultures. Choose based on vibe.
