Two days covering Philadelphia's essential core: Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell in the morning when lines are shortest, Reading Terminal Market for lunch, and a deep dive into South Philly's Italian Market and cheesesteak debate by evening. Day two takes you across the Schuylkill to Museum Row and the Rocky steps. Walkable and transit-friendly.
Start in Old City at the historic core, then work your way south through Reading Terminal Market and into South Philly for the cheesesteak rivalry and Italian Market.
One of the great American public markets — 80+ vendors under a 19th-century train shed. The Pennsylvania Dutch vendors (DiNic's roast pork, Down Home Diner, Miller's Twist pretzels) are the core draw. DiNic's roast pork sandwich is frequently cited as the best sandwich in America. Arrive hungry. The market is busiest at noon on weekdays; weekends are more manageable.
Arrive at the Liberty Bell Center by 9am — it's free and never crowded that early. The bell itself is smaller than most people expect, but the interpretive exhibits on its abolitionist significance are genuinely excellent. Independence Hall next door requires a timed entry ticket (free, reserve online at recreation.gov). The Assembly Room where the Constitution was signed is exactly as you'd imagine it — and more affecting than you'd expect.
Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks sit directly across the intersection from each other at 9th and Passyunk — the only place in the world where you can meaningfully settle this argument. Both are cash only, outdoor ordering, 24 hours. Pat's is the original (1930); Geno's opened across the street in 1966 specifically to compete. Order "wit" (with Cheez Whiz) at both. The correct answer is Pat's, but locals will argue either side.
The oldest outdoor market in the country runs along 9th Street through South Philly. The vendors are a mix of Italian butchers, produce stands, cheese shops, and Mexican grocers — the neighborhood has evolved over 100 years. Fante's Kitchen Shop at the north end has been outfitting Philadelphia cooks since 1906. Di Bruno Bros for cheese and charcuterie. The market is liveliest Saturday mornings but open daily.
Marc Vetri's flagship Vetri Cucina on Spruce Street is one of the best Italian tasting-menu restaurants in the country — book 3–4 weeks out, jacket required, $155+ per person. For a more accessible but still excellent option, his Osteria on Fairmount Ave has wood-fired pork belly and a casual atmosphere at half the price. Either way, South Philly Italian food at its highest expression.
Cross the Schuylkill for Museum Row — the Art Museum, the Barnes Foundation, and Rodin Museum are all within 10 minutes of each other. Afternoon in Fishtown, Philadelphia's most interesting new neighborhood.
Run (or walk) up the 72 steps that Rocky Balboa climbed in the 1976 film — the bronze Rocky statue is at the bottom right of the steps. The museum itself is genuinely world-class: the arms and armor galleries, the European painting collection (Rubens, Renoir, Cézanne), and the period rooms are all outstanding. The view of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from the top of the steps is the best urban vista in Philadelphia.
Fishtown is Philadelphia's most energetic neighborhood — gentrified but not sterile. Walk Frankford Avenue from Girard north: Jinxed (vintage/antiques), Philadelphia Record Exchange (vinyl), and the cluster of bars and restaurants between Girard and York. Suraya at the north end is the neighborhood's best restaurant (modern Lebanese). The neighborhood is most alive Friday and Saturday evenings.
Philadelphia's SEPTA subway runs along Market Street (the Market-Frankford Line) and connects Old City to University City quickly. The Broad Street Line runs north-south through Center City. A $2.50 token works on all modes. Fishtown is on the Market-Frankford Line (Girard stop). The Art Museum area requires a bus or a 30-minute walk from Center City — rideshare is easiest for that leg.
