Two days in Portland hitting the essentials: Powell's City of Books, the SW 10th/Alder food cart pod, the Pearl District galleries, and a morning hike in Forest Park with 80 miles of trail within city limits. Portland's "Keep Portland Weird" ethos is most visible on foot — plan to walk slowly and notice things.
Start the day at Powell's (arrive at 9am when it opens), spend the morning in the Pearl District, and use the SW 10th/Alder food cart pod for lunch. Afternoon in Northwest Portland.
The largest independent bookstore in the world occupies an entire city block — nine color-coded rooms across three floors with over a million new, used, and rare books. The Rare Book Room on the second floor has first editions and signed copies worth browsing even if you don't buy. The staff picks are reliably excellent. Budget at least 90 minutes; most people spend two hours and still miss sections. The cafe inside is fine for coffee while you browse.
Portland's food cart culture is real and the SW 10th/Alder pod downtown is the best concentration. Over a dozen carts in a permanent lot: Nong's Khao Man Gai (Thai chicken rice — frequently cited as the best $10 meal in Portland), Wolf and Bear's (Middle Eastern), and Potato Champion (Belgian fries, served until 3am on weekends). Order from two or three carts and eat at the picnic tables in the center.
The Pearl District is Portland's converted warehouse arts neighborhood — galleries cluster on NW 13th and around the Tiffany Center. Augen Gallery and Froelick Gallery are consistently strong. Then walk four blocks to Voodoo Doughnut (22 SW 3rd) for the cultural ritual: the bacon maple bar, the Voodoo Doll, and the Captain My Captain. The line is usually 15 minutes. Worth it once.
The restaurant that put Portland's food scene on the national map — Gabriel Rucker's French-American bistro on East Burnside has been serving creative, unselfconscious food since 2006. The foie gras profiterole is the most famous dish; the burger at the bar counter is a cult object. Book well in advance or arrive at 5pm when it opens and sit at the counter.
Portland's greatest asset is Forest Park — 5,200 acres of temperate rainforest within city limits. Morning hike, then afternoon in the Alberta Arts District and Hawthorne Boulevard.
The Wildwood Trail runs 30 miles through Forest Park — the longest urban forest trail in the United States. For a two-hour morning loop, enter from the Leif Erikson Drive trailhead at NW Thurman Street and walk to Pittock Mansion overlook (2.5 miles each way). The mansion itself was built by the founder of The Oregonian in 1914 and has panoramic views of Portland and Mt. Hood when clear. Entry to the grounds is free; the mansion interior costs $15.
NE Alberta Street between 15th and 30th is Portland's most eclectic commercial strip: murals, galleries, antique dealers, boutiques, and an uncommonly high density of good independent restaurants. Last Thursday (last Thursday of each month) is a street fair with art vendors and live music. On a regular afternoon, Ampersand Gallery and Fine Books and Nationale are the standout spaces.
Portland's TriMet MAX light rail connects the airport to downtown in 38 minutes ($2.50). The streetcar loops through the Pearl District, NW Portland, and across the river. Day passes ($5) cover all modes. For the Alberta Arts District and Hawthorne, the 15 and 14 buses are the most direct routes from downtown. Lyft and Lime scooters fill the gaps. Portland is unusually bike-friendly — rentals available from Biketown at numerous stations.
