Bohemia, Czech Republic
Prague is the European city that most completely preserved its medieval core — the 1989 Velvet Revolution ended communist rule before the demolitions and concrete blocks could reach the old city, leaving intact a Gothic/Baroque/Art Nouveau ensemble that has no equal in Central Europe. The Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock, the Charles Bridge at dawn (before the tour groups arrive), and Prague Castle above the Vltava river are the monuments. But Prague's real quality is in the density of detail at street level: Art Nouveau buildings on every block in Vinohrady, the Communist-era surrealism still visible in the suburbs, and a bar culture (Pilsner Urquell at the source, Czech beer consumed in volumes that would alarm most Western European countries) that is still affordable by any standard. Avoid: the tourist-priced restaurants on the Old Town Square.

Václav Havel Airport (PRG) is 17 km west — Bus 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín Metro station (B line, 20 min, CZK 40), then Metro into the center. Airport Express bus runs direct to Hlavní nádraží (main train station) in 35 min, CZK 100. Taxis from PRG to center run CZK 600–800 (€24–32); use only metered taxis from official ranks or pre-booked apps. The Prague Metro (3 lines, A/B/C), trams, and buses are clean and efficient; a 24-hour pass is CZK 120 (€5). Central Prague is very walkable; the Old Town, Charles Bridge, and Malá Strana are 15 minutes apart on foot. Prague remains one of Western/Central Europe's most affordable cities: a pint of Czech beer in a normal pub runs CZK 35–50 (€1.40–2), a three-course dinner €10–15 outside tourist areas.
