Three days for families in Santo Domingo — the Colonial Zone history in a format that works for children, Los Tres Ojos cave lagoon system (one of the best natural attractions in the Caribbean for kids), and a beach day at Boca Chica. Santo Domingo is less obvious than Punta Cana for families but more rewarding for children who respond to genuine history and natural experiences.
The Fortaleza Ozama works well for children — a real fort with cannons, a tower to climb, and a prison dungeon to explore. The Alcázar de Colón's costumed interpretors (on weekends) help contextualize the space. Parque Colón as a rest stop between sites. Framing the visit around "the first European city in the Americas" gives children aged 8+ a strong conceptual anchor.
Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes) is a karst cave system 15 minutes east of the Colonial Zone — three underground freshwater lagoons in interconnected limestone caverns. The largest lagoon is 50 meters across and illuminated by a natural skylight. A small boat carries visitors across the fourth lagoon to Lago de las Damas. The cave temperature stays around 72°F year-round. Children respond immediately to the cave exploration format. Entry is RD$200 (~$3.50).

The Boca Chica lagoon is ideal for families with young children — the reef protects the cove so there's almost no wave action, the water is clear and warm, and the depth is waist-level for 30 yards out. Families set up under palm shade with beach chairs and spend the day in the water. Fresh grilled fish from the beach shacks is the correct lunch. Budget RD$2,000–3,000 for chairs, food, and drinks for a family of four.
