Two days hitting Seattle's essential core: Pike Place Market at opening, the waterfront, Pioneer Square's underground history, and Capitol Hill's restaurant and bar scene. This itinerary stays walkable and transit-friendly — no car needed. Best on a weekend when the market is at full noise.
Start at Pike Place before the crowds arrive, work south through the waterfront, then end the afternoon in Pioneer Square. Evening in Capitol Hill for dinner and drinks.
The Russian bakery inside Pike Place has been there since 1992. The smoked salmon piroshky and the apple cinnamon roll are the order. Cash only, line moves fast. This is a $10 breakfast that's better than most $30 ones.
Be there at 9am when the fishmongers set up and the produce stalls are still being arranged. The famous fish toss happens all day but the energy is best before 10:30. Skip the original Starbucks line (it's always 45 minutes) — walk one block to Seattle's Best or grab a cup from one of the market's smaller vendors instead. The cheese shop (Beecher's), the crab vendors, and the flower stalls in the lower arcade are the real draws.
Walk north from Pike Place along the rebuilt waterfront (the seawall was replaced in 2019 — it's significantly nicer now). The Olympic Sculpture Park at the north end is free, has Alexander Calder and Richard Serra pieces, and gives you unobstructed views of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. The walk from market to park is about 1.5 miles.
For a special meal: Altura on Capitol Hill does modern Italian tasting menus in a beautifully intimate room — book 3–4 weeks out. For a more casual but still excellent option, try Bateau on Capitol Hill (steak, natural wine, James Beard-nominated) or Lark (seasonal Pacific Northwest). All are within a 10-minute walk of each other on or near 15th Ave E.
Cross the Ship Canal to Seattle's most characterful neighborhoods. Fremont has the troll, the Lenin statue, and the best Sunday market in the city. Ballard has the locks and a Scandinavian fishing village history that's still visible if you know where to look.
Seattle's best flea/antique/craft market runs Sundays year-round under the Aurora Bridge. Vendors set up from 10am. The mix of vintage furniture, records, art, and food trucks is genuinely good. The Fremont Troll is a two-minute walk — a 18-foot concrete sculpture under the north end of the Aurora Bridge. Extremely photogenic.
The most beloved raw bar in Seattle. Renee Erickson's tiny restaurant does pristine Pacific Northwest oysters, Dungeness crab, and small plates. No reservations — show up when it opens at 4pm (or noon on weekends) to beat the wait. The beet salad and the uni toast are as good as the shellfish.
Watch boats move between Puget Sound and Lake Union through a working lock system that's been running since 1917. The fish ladder on the south side lets you watch salmon migrating through glass-walled viewing windows in season (late June–November). Free, open daily, and genuinely fascinating. The adjacent botanical garden is a good 20-minute walk.
Seattle's Link Light Rail runs from the airport to Capitol Hill, Westlake, and the University District. For Fremont and Ballard, the 40 bus from downtown is the most direct option. The ORCA card works across all transit — load one at any station. Parking downtown costs $25–40/day; transit is faster for most trips.
