Vermont, United States
Stowe is the New England ski resort that all other New England ski resorts are compared to — Mount Mansfield (4,393 feet, the highest peak in Vermont), the Front Four (Starr, National, Liftline, Goat — four consecutive black diamond trails that defined aggressive Eastern skiing for generations), and a village that predates the resort and still functions as an actual Vermont town rather than a purpose-built ski village. The Trapp Family Lodge (yes, that von Trapp family) sits above the town and has cross-country skiing and Nordic trails that are the best in the Northeast. The drive from Boston is 3.5 hours; from New York it's 5. Stowe in a good snow year is the argument that the East can compete with the West; in a low-snow year, the snowmaking is reliable enough to hold the mountain together. The town itself — a church steeple, a general store, covered bridges — is the idealized Vermont.

Burlington International Airport (BTV) is 36 miles west — car rental is standard ($50–80/day). Boston Logan (BOS) is 3.5 hours by car via I-89 north; New York JFK is 5 hours via I-91 and I-89. Amtrak Vermonter runs from New York Penn Station to Waterbury-Stowe (5 hours), with a resort shuttle connection to the mountain. Stowe Mountain Resort has free shuttle service between the village and the two base areas (Spruce Peak and Mansfield). The Stowe Recreation Path is 5.3 miles and connects the village to the resort in summer and is groomed for cross-country skiing in winter. Most lodging in Stowe is independent inns and bed-and-breakfasts rather than large hotels — book the Mountain Road properties for ski-in/ski-out proximity.
