The town has evolved from a backpacker discovery into one of the most design-forward resort destinations in the world, with boutique eco-hotels in the jungle, beach clubs that operate at a global standard, and a cenote system — a network of underground sinkholes connected by subterranean rivers — that is genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth. Gran Cenote and Cenote Dos Ojos are the most accessible; serious divers come for the 215-mile underwater cave system.

Tulum International Airport (TQO) opened December 2023 and is 25 km south of Tulum town — direct US routes from multiple cities. Cancún International Airport (CUN) is 2 hours north with more route options; ADO bus runs directly to Tulum for ~$15 USD. The Hotel Zone beach road runs 10 km with no public transit — bicycle rental is the practical low-cost option ($8–12/day). Taxis between town and beach road cost $5–10 USD. Cash (pesos) is preferred at local restaurants and markets.
