Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, a surf lesson, Leonard's malasadas, and more time on the beach than you feel you deserve. The complete first-timer's Waikiki.
Get to the beach before the afternoon trade winds kick up (usually by 2pm). Waikiki faces southwest — the sunset hits the water directly from the beach.
Waikiki has the most beginner-friendly surf in the world — a long, slow-breaking wave called the Canoes break that's been used to teach surfing for over a century. Lessons run –100 and every instructor gets beginners standing within the first session. Hans Hedemann Surf School and Waikiki Beachboys are both reliable.
Named after Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing, Duke's is right on the beach with outdoor seating and reliable Hawaiian-Pacific food. The hula pie (macadamia nut ice cream dessert) is the signature. Not the cheapest meal in Waikiki but the beach location and the sunset from the outdoor bar justify it.
The northeast trade winds pick up most afternoons around 1–2pm, kicking up chop and making the water less flat. Morning (before noon) is the best time to swim. The beach is also less crowded before 10am. Evenings are calm again and the best time for longboard surfing.
The Diamond Head hike is best done early before the heat. Honolulu Chinatown in the afternoon is one of the most overlooked neighborhoods in the state.
A 1.6-mile round-trip hike inside the volcanic crater to a 360-degree summit view of Oahu's south shore. Go before 8am — the parking lot fills by 9am and the trail gets crowded fast. The switchbacks inside the crater and a 99-step staircase through a WWII bunker tunnel make it more interesting than a standard summit walk.
One of the oldest Chinatowns in the US — the River Street area has dim sum parlors, Vietnamese pho shops, Filipino bakeries, and a fresh lei market. Walk through the Oahu Market for fresh ahi, visit Maunakea Marketplace for dim sum, and grab a shave ice at any of the small stands. Underrated half-day.
A full morning at Pearl Harbor requires advance tickets and about 3 hours. Sobering and important.
A James Beard Award-winning plate lunch counter that has been serving traditional Hawaiian food since 1946 — pipikaula (dried beef ribs), lomi salmon, haupia (coconut pudding), and poi. The closest thing to an authentic Hawaiian meal you'll find outside a family gathering. Lines form before opening. Cash only.
The USS Arizona Memorial is the centerpiece — a white bridge structure built over the sunken battleship where 1,177 sailors remain. A short boat ride from the visitor center. Book tickets at recreation.gov 2–3 weeks in advance (free but timed entry fills quickly). The Battleship Missouri, where Japan surrendered, is adjacent and worth adding.
Lanikai Beach is the best beach on Oahu and most visitors never go. 45 minutes from Waikiki, but worth every minute.
The best pancake breakfast in Hawaii — macadamia nut sauce pancakes that have been on the menu since the restaurant opened. Lines out the door every morning. Get there at opening (7:30am) or wait 45 minutes. Cash only. Worth planning your entire Lanikai morning around.
Consistently rated one of the top 10 beaches in the world — powder-white sand, flat turquoise water, the Mokulua islands offshore for kayaking, and almost no facilities (which is the point). Arrive before 8am for a parking spot on the residential streets. Bring everything you need. Kailua Beach is adjacent and equally good with easier parking.
