Michigan, United States
Boyne Mountain is the premier ski resort in the Great Lakes region — not because it competes with Colorado in vertical drop (it doesn't; the summit is 1,080 feet, vertical drop 500 feet) but because it punches well above its altitude class in infrastructure, snow-making (95% of terrain covered), and the weekend getaway culture it has built with Chicago, Detroit, and Ohio visitors since 1948. What Boyne lacks in mountains it compensates in reliability: when the rest of Michigan is icy and inconsistent, Boyne's snowmaking system can open every run in 48 hours regardless of natural snow. The resort sits near Boyne City in Charlevoix County, in the heart of the northern Michigan lake district — Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan are 20 minutes away, and the Traverse City wine and cherry country is 30 minutes south. Boyne Highlands (5 miles north, same ownership) adds a second mountain with a slightly different character.

The resort is 5 hours from Chicago, 4.5 hours from Detroit, 3.5 hours from Grand Rapids by car — no good flight option exists for domestic US travelers (Pellston Regional Airport, PLN, is 25 miles away but has limited commercial service). Drive I-75 north or US-131 north depending on origin. The resort offers ski-in/ski-out lodging on the mountain itself (Boyne Mountain Lodge, Mountain Grand Lodge & Spa) — staying on-site eliminates the driving math. Weekends from Christmas through March are peak; Presidents' Weekend (February) books out months ahead. Boyne offers free skiing for children 12 and under with a paying adult — the best family value proposition in Midwest skiing. The Avalanche Bay indoor water park at Boyne Mountain is open year-round and provides a non-ski option for travel parties with non-skiers.
