The standard Boyne Mountain weekend: drive up Friday afternoon, ski Saturday and Sunday, drive home. The resort is designed for this format — on-mountain lodging eliminates the drive-to-ski problem, the snowmaking is reliable, and the après-ski scene at the Snowflake Lounge and the Mountain Grand is well-calibrated for Midwest winter vibes.
Boyne Mountain has 60 runs spread across the main mountain face and the South Slope — the terrain is more varied than the vertical drop suggests. The snowmaking system covers 95% of terrain, which means the mountain is fully open most of the season regardless of natural snowfall. Night skiing runs until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights.
Start on the Middle Slopes and South Slope — the intermediate terrain that gets your legs under you without punishing a cold start. The Disciples Ridge lift serves the best intermediate runs on the mountain. Hemlock and Pioneers are the classic cruiser runs that regulars use to build speed before hitting the steeper terrain. First chair is 9am on weekends; get there by 8:45 to avoid the lift line that forms at open.
The Snowflake Lounge is the base lodge bar at Boyne Mountain — a proper après-ski room with a fireplace, good hot chocolate, and a beer selection that hits the right notes for a Midwest ski resort. The chili in the lodge cafeteria is genuinely good and cheap. Take an hour here after the morning ski session before the afternoon runs.
Boyne Mountain runs night skiing on Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 10pm — the lighted runs cover the main mountain face and the groomed surface after the afternoon break is excellent. Night skiing is included with most lift ticket packages. The crowds thin dramatically after 5pm as day visitors leave, making the evening the most enjoyable ski time of the weekend.
Boyne Mountain offers free skiing for children 12 and under when accompanied by a paying adult — this is the best family value proposition in Midwest skiing and dramatically lowers the cost of a family ski trip. Families should confirm current terms at booking as the offer may have date or lift ticket requirements. The savings on a family of four can be $200+ per day.
The combo lift ticket covers both Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands (5 miles north, same ownership). Alternating days covers the best of both mountains. Boyne Highlands has a slightly longer vertical drop and a different mountain character — more widely spaced trees, different grooming pattern. The drive between them is 10 minutes.
Boyne Highlands is 5 miles north of Boyne Mountain and is included on the combo lift ticket. It has four distinct terrain areas — the Highlands main face, Heather, Nub's Nob (separate ownership but nearby), and a terrain park area. The Highlands has slightly more vertical and a longer groomer run selection than the main mountain. Many Boyne regulars alternate days between the two mountains over a weekend — it's the right strategy for maximizing terrain variety.
Avalanche Bay is a 65,000-square-foot indoor water park at Boyne Mountain — 10 water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and a kids' aquatic play area. It's open year-round and is the solution for travel parties with non-skiers. Some lodging packages include Avalanche Bay admission; day passes run approximately $40/person. It's also the right call on heavy weather days when the snow conditions turn icy.
Boyne Mountain operates year-round. In summer the mountain becomes a golf destination — The Monument Course and The Alpine Course are both PGA-quality and the northern Michigan setting is exceptional. Lake Charlevoix and Walloon Lake (Hemingway's childhood lake) are 15 minutes from the resort and offer swimming, paddling, and boat rentals. The resort itself has mountain biking trails on the ski runs in summer.
