The Bean, an architecture boat tour, deep dish at Pequod's, the Art Institute, and a night in Wicker Park. Three days that cover Chicago's best without cramming.
Start at the center of the city. Millennium Park is free, world-class, and immediately puts you in the Chicago frame of mind. The architecture boat tour in the afternoon is the single best orientation you can get.
The Bean is one of the best public sculptures in the world — a 110-ton chrome ellipse that reflects the skyline in a wide-angle distortion. Arrive early (before 9am) for photos without crowds. The park also has the Pritzker Pavilion outdoor stage, the Crown Fountain, and Lurie Garden. All free.
The deep dish debate in Chicago is real. Pequod's wins it. The caramelized cheese crust (cheese baked directly into the cast iron) is what separates it from Giordano's and Lou Malnati's. Located in Lincoln Park. Cash only for smaller groups. Call ahead — 45-minute waits are normal on weekends. Order before you sit down.
The best 90 minutes you can spend in Chicago. A docent-led boat tour along the Chicago River covers 50+ buildings and explains how Chicago became the architectural capital of the world after the 1871 fire. The CAF runs multiple departures daily. Book in advance in summer. Sit on the left side of the boat for the best views on the outbound leg.
The Art Institute is one of the five best art museums in the world. Give it half a day minimum. The Museum Campus has the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, and Adler Planetarium clustered together — pick one for the afternoon.
The second largest art museum in the US, with the world's best collection of French Impressionism outside Paris — Seurat's Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Nighthawks by Hopper, and a Grant Wood you've definitely seen. Budget 3–4 hours. The Modern Wing (Renzo Piano addition) is a masterpiece of its own.
Two of Chicago's best restaurants in the West Loop, within walking distance of each other. Girl & the Goat (Stephanie Izard) does large-format sharing plates with bold flavors — the goat empanadas and wood-roasted pig face are the signatures. avec is smaller, more intimate, wood-roasted meats and chorizo-stuffed dates. Both require reservations at least a week out.
Chicago's best neighborhood for a final morning — independent bookshops, coffee roasters, and vintage stores along Milwaukee Avenue.
The stretch of Milwaukee Ave from the Damen L stop north through Wicker Park has the best independent retail corridor in Chicago — Myopic Books, Reckless Records, The Wormhole coffee shop, and a dozen vintage clothing stores. Walk it in the morning before the crowds. The neighborhood also has some of the best Chicago Victorian architecture outside the Gold Coast.
The inspiration for the original SNL Cheezborger sketch — a 1964 underground dive beneath Michigan Avenue that's been serving the same hamburgers to journalists and tourists for 60 years. Order a double Cheezborger, chips (no fries!), and a Pepsi. No frills, all Chicago. The Lower Michigan Ave location is the original.
One of the last free zoos in the United States, in a beautiful lakefront park setting. The zoo houses 200+ species and the grounds connect to the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Good for a 90-minute final walk before heading to O'Hare. The Great Ape House and the Regenstein African Journey are the best exhibits.
