Three days anchored by Chicago's world-class museum corridor in Grant Park and the South Side's Hyde Park — the Art Institute, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and the Museum of Science and Industry — capped by live jazz on the North Side. The museum campus alone justifies the trip from anywhere in the Midwest.
The Art Institute is the best reason to come to Chicago if you're an art person. Three hours minimum. The Modern Wing alone justifies the trip.
Eataly occupies 63,000 square feet in the Faena Hotel Tower — the Italian market/restaurant complex with counter restaurants, a proper pasta bar, a pizza counter, a butcher, a fishmonger, and the Nutella café. Eat at the pasta counter in the middle of the market floor. This is lunch done correctly.
The Art Institute is among the top five art museums in the world outside of Europe. The permanent collection includes Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Grant Wood's American Gothic, Georges Braque and Picasso's full cubism sequence, a Monet water lilies room, Whistler's Nocturne in Black and Gold, and the Thorne Miniature Rooms (67 perfectly scaled historical interiors). The Modern Wing by Renzo Piano is architectural news on its own. Budget 3–4 hours and use the audio guide for the impressionists. Tickets are $35/adult; Illinois residents and under-14 are free.
Green Mill is the historic jazz venue on the North Side — it's been open since 1907, Al Capone had his regular booth (booth 3 on the right, still there), and the Sunday Jazz Showcase has run weekly since 1977. Andy's Jazz Club in River North is more accessible for first-timers. Both run late sets starting at 9–10pm. Cover is $10–20.
The Museum Campus on the lakefront holds three world-class institutions within walking distance: the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. Pick two and go deep rather than rushing all three.
The Field Museum is the best natural history museum in the United States outside the Smithsonian. Sue — the largest and most complete T. rex skeleton ever found (13 tons, 67 million years old) — is the anchor, now displayed in the Stanley Field Hall with her own glass case since the 2018 renovation. The Ancient Egypt exhibition has actual mummies and excellent context. The Evolving Planet walkthrough covers 4 billion years of life on Earth. Budget 3–4 hours. Tickets are $40/adult.
Hyde Park is the University of Chicago neighborhood on the South Side — Barack Obama's former home base, one of the most intellectually dense neighborhoods in America, and home to the Museum of Science and Industry in a building that was the only permanent structure left standing from the 1893 World's Fair.
The MSI is in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition — the only surviving building from the fair, relocated to Hyde Park. Inside: a genuine WWII-era German U-505 submarine (captured in 1944, transported to Chicago, now housed in a climate-controlled underground gallery), a coal mine replica visitors can descend into, a full-scale model of a 727 jetliner cut in half, and the annual holiday model train exhibition. One of the best science museums in the country. Tickets are $35/adult.
