Columbus is quietly one of the best family cities in the Midwest. The Columbus Zoo is genuinely world-class, COSI ranks among the top science museums in the country, and German Village gives kids something they will not forget. Plan two full days.
Spend the full first day at the zoo. It is 20 minutes north of downtown in Powell and requires the better part of a day to see properly. Morning arrival beats the crowds.
Consistently ranked one of the top five zoos in the United States. The zoo covers 580 acres across themed regions — Africa, Asia Quest, the Discovery Reef aquarium, and more. The polar bear habitat and gorilla viewing area are highlights. Budget 4 to 5 hours minimum; a full day if kids are setting the pace. Jack Hanna built this into a national institution over four decades. Buy tickets online in advance — gate price is higher and lines are longer.
Head to Easton after the zoo — it is between Powell and downtown and has solid family-friendly options at every price point. The outdoor layout means kids have room to move between courses.
Arrive at opening (9am) to see the animals most active. The adjacent Zoombezi Bay waterpark is separately ticketed and makes a great hot-summer add-on after the zoo. Bring snacks — food inside is expensive.
COSI in the morning (plan 3 hours), lunch at North Market, then a walk through German Village. Slower pace than Day 1.
One of the highest-rated science museums in the country. The Ocean exhibit, Big Science Park outdoor area, and the planetarium are all worth the time. The kid-specific areas are well-designed. Budget 3 hours.
Multiple vendors, communal tables, and enough variety that even picky eaters find something. Saturdays are the most lively with the farmers market running outside.
Even kids who claim not to like bookstores get sucked into the Book Loft — it is 32 connected rooms in a historic building, with narrow staircases and rooms for every category. A genuine Columbus landmark.
