Two days hitting the essential Hocking Hills geology circuit — Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and Conkle's Hollow. This is Ohio's most surprising landscape and the sandstone caves and waterfalls are legitimately stunning.
The gorge trail connecting Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls is Hocking Hills' most iconic hike — 6 miles round-trip through hemlock hollows, over cedar-lined streams, and past two major waterfalls. It's not difficult terrain but the footing is wet and uneven. Wear proper footwear.
Old Man's Cave is Hocking Hills State Park's centerpiece — a recess cave carved into Black Hand sandstone by the Hocking River over thousands of years. The cave itself is named for a hermit who lived here in the 1800s. The Upper Falls and Lower Falls bracket the cave formation. The gorge is dramatic and the hemlock forest overhead creates a microclimate that feels like the Pacific Northwest. Arrive early to beat crowds — it gets busy by 10am on weekends.
The best dinner in Hocking Hills is a campfire at your cabin. Stop at an IGA or Kroger in Logan before heading into the hills — pick up local sausage, corn, vegetables, and whatever you need for the grill. The Hocking Hills Winery in Logan is worth a wine stop for the evening.
The cabin rental economy in Hocking Hills is extensive — everything from rustic one-room retreats to luxury cabins with hot tubs and fire pits. Hocking Hills Cabin Rentals and The Wilds of Hocking are reliable booking platforms for the region. Book 2–3 months out for weekends; 6 months out for October leaf season. Most good cabins include fire pits, outdoor grills, and kitchen facilities — plan to cook some meals.
Day two covers the less-trafficked half of the Hocking Hills circuit. Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio — 700 feet across. Conkle's Hollow has a gorge trail and a rim trail with the best elevated views in the region.
Bob Evans is from Hocking Hills — the original farm is in Rio Grande, OH, about 45 minutes south, and the museum and restaurant there give context to the chain that started here. Worth the detour if you're not heading back north. Otherwise, the Hocking Hills Family Restaurant in Logan is the workmanlike local option.
Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio — a 700-foot-wide horseshoe of sandstone 90 feet high, with a waterfall dropping from the rim to the cave floor when water is flowing. It's accessed via a flat, paved 0.3-mile trail from the parking lot (making it accessible to all fitness levels). The scale of the cave is genuinely impressive. Early morning or late afternoon light makes this one of the most photographable spots in Ohio.
The sandstone formations in Hocking Hills have excellent sport climbing routes — Ozone area and several other crags near Old Man's Cave. Hocking Hills Climbing offers guided sessions and gear rental. If you haven't climbed outdoors before, this is an ideal beginner terrain. Book ahead for weekend dates.
