Three days that prove Las Vegas is also an outdoor destination. Morning hikes at Red Rock Canyon when the desert light is perfect, afternoon pools on the Strip, evenings in the casinos. Most Vegas visitors never leave the hotel zone — this itinerary does.
Arrive, check in, get your bearings. The Strip at night from the Cosmopolitan bridge looking south is one of the great visual spectacles in American cities. Go get acquainted.
Pick one casino and actually explore it — most visitors walk through without looking up. The Bellagio conservatory changes with the seasons and is free. The Venetian's Grand Canal Shoppes has gondolas on an indoor canal. The Wynn's interior is genuinely beautiful. You're not gambling tonight — you're orienting.
Early start mandatory. Red Rock Canyon is best before 9am — the light is golden, the temperature is cool, and the crowds are thin. You're 30 minutes from the Strip and it looks like the cover of a geology textbook.
The Calico Hills trail is the best introduction to Red Rock — 2.5 miles round trip, moderate terrain, and the Calico formation is the photogenic heart of the park. The contrast of the red sandstone against the desert floor and the Spring Mountains behind is unlike anything in the Las Vegas area. Wear closed-toe shoes and start before 8am in summer; the rocks radiate heat quickly once the sun is up.
Return to the Strip by midday. Afternoon pool is the correct recovery from a morning desert hike. The temperature swing between 7am Red Rock and 1pm Vegas pool is part of the appeal.
Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips at The LINQ is the best mid-priced dinner on the Strip — surprisingly good for a celebrity chef property, reasonable prices (~$30/person), and fast. Follow it with some time on the casino floor. Tonight is your gambling night if you have one.
Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles from the Strip — about 30 minutes by car. You need a rental car or rideshare; there's no convenient shuttle. The scenic loop road opens at 6am year-round. Entry fee is $15 per vehicle. Bring 2+ liters of water per person even on short hikes — the desert desiccates fast.
Optional second outdoor excursion before your flight. Hoover Dam is 35 minutes southeast — the tour is surprisingly fascinating. Valley of Fire State Park (1 hour north) is less visited and the geology is dramatic.
The Hoover Dam is a genuine engineering marvel — 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete, built in 4 years during the Depression, and it still generates power for 1.3 million homes. The self-guided tour of the dam interior is $30 per person and takes about 2 hours. The PowerPlant Tour adds the generator floor and is worth the extra $15. Go on a weekday morning if possible — weekends are crowded. The view of Lake Mead from the Hoover Dam bypass bridge is one of the better scenic overlooks in the Southwest.
