North America, USA
Maui is the most complete Hawaiian island for first-time visitors — it has the dramatic volcanic landscape of Haleakala National Park, the 52-mile Road to Hana with its waterfalls and black sand beaches, the world-class surf and windsurfing conditions of Ho'okipa, and the historic whaling town of Lahaina. The island splits neatly into two zones: West Maui (resort beaches, whale watching in winter) and East Maui (wild coastline, rainforest, the Road to Hana). The North Shore corridor between Paia and Haiku is Maui's most lived-in stretch. Mama's Fish House has been the island's landmark restaurant since 1973.
West Maui / Ka'anapali (resort beaches) · Lahaina (historic town) · Paia / North Shore (surfers, local life) · Hana (remote east coast) · Upcountry (Makawao, Kula, farms) · Haleakala National Park · South Maui / Wailea (luxury resorts)
Kahului Airport (OGG) is the main gateway — all major airlines serve it from the mainland. Car rental is essentially mandatory; public transit is minimal and Hana is inaccessible without a vehicle. Reserve a car well in advance, especially in peak season. The Road to Hana is a 52-mile, 3-hour drive each way with 600+ curves — start before 8am to avoid traffic. Haleakala sunrise requires a timed entry reservation at recreation.gov; book weeks ahead. Whale watching season is December–April.
