Four days covering the defining Maui experiences: Haleakala at sunrise before the crowds arrive, the Road to Hana with stops that actually justify the drive, snorkeling at Molokini Crater, and time in Paia and the North Shore. Mama's Fish House requires a reservation made weeks out — plan the rest of the trip around that meal.
The summit at 10,023 feet before dawn, then descend to the North Shore for breakfast in Paia and the rest of the day at leisure.
The summit of Haleakala at 10,023 feet is one of the most otherworldly sunrise experiences in the world — you are above the cloud layer, watching light change across a volcanic crater stretching 7 miles across. Temperature at the summit is 30–40°F at sunrise; bring a warm layer. A timed entry reservation is required for sunrise (3am–7am window) and must be booked at recreation.gov, often weeks in advance. Leave your hotel by 2:30am from Kihei or Ka'anapali. Nene geese (Hawaii's state bird) are commonly seen on the crater rim.
Ho'okipa Beach Park is one mile east of Paia and the globally recognized home of professional windsurfing and kiteboarding. The viewpoint above the beach is the place to watch from. Green sea turtles (honu) regularly rest on the east end of the beach — keep a 10-foot distance. Swimming is dangerous in winter; more suitable in summer when conditions calm.
The full Road to Hana — the 52-mile coastal drive with waterfalls, black sand beach, and bamboo forest. Leave by 7am.
The Road to Hana (Highway 360) is 52 miles of narrow, winding two-lane road with 56 one-lane bridges through rainforest, cliffside coast, and waterfalls. Leave Paia by 7am. Key stops: Twin Falls (Mile 2) for the easiest waterfall swim; Waikamoi Nature Trail (Mile 9) through bamboo forest; Ke'anae Peninsula (Mile 16) with an 1860 stone church and Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread; Wai'anapanapa State Park (Mile 32) with black sand beach formed by lava. Reserve Wai'anapanapa parking at hawaiistateparks.reserveamerica.com ($5 day use fee).

Morning snorkel boat to Molokini Crater, afternoon in Lahaina historic district.
Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater 3 miles off the South Maui coast — a crescent of rock enclosing some of the clearest water in Hawaii (visibility often 100+ feet). The protected marine reserve hosts over 250 species of fish. Boat trips depart from Ma'alaea Harbor at 7am; the $100–130 tour includes breakfast and snorkel gear. Book with Pride of Maui or Trilogy — both are reputable operators.
Mama's Fish House on Paia Bay has been the standard-bearer of Hawaiian seafood cooking since 1973. Every fish on the menu was caught that morning; the menu names the fisherman and where they caught it. The coconut fish chowder and the Ono in macadamia nut crust are the defining dishes. Reserve four to six weeks in advance at mamasfishhouse.com.
Lahaina was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 to 1845. The 150-year-old banyan tree at Courthouse Square — the largest banyan tree in the United States with a canopy covering almost an entire acre — is the visual landmark. Note: The 2023 wildfires caused significant damage to Lahaina; reconstruction is ongoing. Check current conditions and support local businesses before your visit.
Three things require advance booking: (1) Haleakala sunrise timed entry — recreation.gov, opens 60 days in advance; (2) Mama's Fish House — 4–6 weeks ahead minimum; (3) Wai'anapanapa State Park parking — hawaiistateparks.reserveamerica.com. Car rental should be reserved before your flight. Grocery prices on Maui are 30–50% higher than mainland; Costco in Kahului is the reliable option.
