Two days built around Cactus League spring training — the Cubs at Sloan Park in Mesa, the Giants at Scottsdale Stadium, and the Old Town Scottsdale bar scene between games. February through late March, when 15 MLB teams train in the Phoenix metro and tickets cost $15 instead of $150.
Morning game at Sloan Park — the Cubs' spring training facility and a magnet for the entire Cubs Nation fan base. Afternoon at Tempe Town Lake on the ASU campus. Dinner on Mill Avenue in Tempe.
Sloan Park in Mesa is the Cubs' spring training home since 2014 and the most attended spring training venue in the Cactus League — Cubs fans travel from Chicago in massive numbers, giving the ballpark a genuine playoff-adjacent energy in February and March. The facility holds 15,000 (12,000 fixed seats plus berm seating) and was built to feel like a miniature Wrigley Field: ivy on the outfield walls, the same scoreboard color palette, the ivy graphics. The outfield berm is general admission and the best value: bring a blanket, get a beer and a hot dog, and watch from the grass. Ticket prices run $15–45 depending on section and opponent. Afternoon games start at 1:05pm; morning batting practice begins at 9:30am and is worth arriving early for — players are accessible along the rail during BP.
Tempe Town Lake is a 2-mile reservoir on the Salt River created by inflatable rubber dams — the result is a legitimate lakefront in the middle of a desert city, with kayak and paddleboat rentals, a 5-mile paved loop trail, and the Tempe Center for the Arts on the western bank. The ASU campus (immediately north of the lake) is one of the largest in the country by enrollment and worth a walk through the Palm Walk corridor and around Old Main. The Gammage Auditorium on the south edge of campus — designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and one of his last major commissions, completed after his death — is worth a look from the exterior.
Mill Avenue in Tempe is the ASU-adjacent dining and bar strip — lively on spring training weekends when the out-of-town fans spill over from the ballparks. House of Tricks in a converted 1920s house just off Mill Avenue is the most accomplished kitchen in Tempe: a seasonal menu focused on local ingredients, a covered garden patio, and cooking that punches well above the surroundings. Postino WineCafé on Mill is the reliable crowd-pleaser: bruschetta boards, good wine by the glass, and an outdoor patio that fits the 70°F evening weather perfectly. House of Tricks for two: $80–100. Postino: $40–60.
Tempe is the best base for a Cactus League weekend — central location between Mesa (Cubs, Angels), Scottsdale (Giants, A's), and Phoenix proper. The Westin Tempe, Andaz Scottsdale, and Graduate Tempe are all well-positioned. Scottsdale hotels see a price surge during spring training (February–March); book 4–6 weeks in advance or rates climb fast. Airbnb in Tempe or Central Phoenix runs cheaper and often more convenient for early morning drives to trailheads.
Morning game at Scottsdale Stadium — the Giants' intimate downtown park — then browse Old Town Scottsdale, and if the calendar aligns, a Phoenix Suns game at Footprint Center downtown in the evening.
Scottsdale Stadium is the most atmospheric of the Cactus League venues — a 12,000-seat facility built in 1992 in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, within walking distance of the galleries and shops on Main Street and Marshal Way. The Giants have trained here since 1984 and the ballpark has the intimacy of a minor league park combined with major league talent on the field. The bleachers are general admission ($10 tickets available); the shaded grandstand sections run $20–35. The left-field berm with its palm trees and mountain views in the background is the signature Cactus League aesthetic. Batting practice starts at 9am for a 1:05pm game; the concession stands inside are better than average (local barbecue, green chile options, cold beer for $10).
Old Town Scottsdale is the historic core of what was once a small agricultural town — now a concentrated gallery and shopping district with the highest density of art galleries outside of New York and Santa Fe. The western and Native American art galleries on Main Street and Marshall Way range from genuinely excellent (Overture Gallery, Wilde Meyer Gallery for contemporary Native art) to tourist-grade kitsch; the distinction is obvious within 5 minutes of walking. The Scottsdale Arts District has over 80 galleries; the ArtWalk on Thursday evenings has the best energy. The Scottsdale Waterfront on the Arizona Canal is the shopping and restaurant area built around the canal; it's pleasant for a walk and has better restaurant options than the immediate Old Town strip.
Spring training tickets sell out for marquee matchups (Cubs vs. Dodgers, Giants vs. Angels) 4–6 weeks in advance — buy online at the team's website, not StubHub, to avoid markup. The Cactus League has 15 teams across 10 stadiums concentrated in a 30-mile radius; with a car you can theoretically attend an afternoon game and an evening split-squad game the same day. The best Cactus League value is the berm/general admission sections ($10–15) which give you the full game experience at minor league prices. Hotel rates in Scottsdale and Tempe are at peak during February and March — book 8–10 weeks in advance or prices are painful.
If the Suns are in town (NBA regular season runs October–April, overlapping with spring training's February–March window), a game at Footprint Center downtown is a clean doubleheader with the afternoon Cactus League game. The arena is modern, the sightlines are excellent, and the downtown Phoenix location is walkable from the light rail. Tickets range from $40 (upper deck) to $200+ (lower bowl); the lower bowl has a legitimate NBA atmosphere. Check nba.com/suns for the game schedule 2–3 weeks out.
