Four days in the Sandusky area covering the three best family experiences in the Great Lakes Midwest — Cedar Point for roller coasters and beach, Kalahari Resorts for the largest indoor waterpark in the US, and Put-in-Bay for a golf cart island day. Each day has a completely different character and the combination keeps energy high across age groups.
Cedar Point for families with mixed ages: Millennium Force and Steel Vengeance for adults and older teens, Gatekeeper and Rougarou for middle age groups (54-inch minimum height), and Planet Snoopy in the back of the park for younger children (full thrill ride section, not just kiddie rides). The park is large enough that a family can split for two hours and regroup without anyone feeling shortchanged.
Kalahari in Sandusky is the largest indoor waterpark in the United States — 173,000 square feet of water features under one roof including a wave pool, a 10-person raft ride, a lazy river, and a full outdoor water park section in summer. The resort hotel is connected directly to the waterpark so you can walk out in swimwear. Day passes for non-guests run $60–80/person. Resort hotel packages include unlimited waterpark access. Best for ages 3–16 with something for every age.
The ferry to Put-in-Bay is an adventure in itself for children who haven't been on a boat before. The golf cart rental keeps them engaged on the island. Perry's Cave (underground cave with an underground lake, accessible for all ages) is the best 45-minute stop on the island for children. Perry's Victory Monument elevator takes you to the top of a 352-foot column for a bird's eye view of Lake Erie.
Kelleys Island is the quieter, more nature-focused alternative to Put-in-Bay — 2,800 acres, a state park, and the Glacial Grooves State Memorial (the largest accessible glacial grooves in the world, carved by a glacier 18,000 years ago, free). The ferry from Marblehead is 20 minutes. Rent bikes on arrival for the island loop trail. Better for families with younger children who can't handle Put-in-Bay's pace.
