Two days on the west side of Michigan — South Beach swimming, the red lighthouse at sunset, blueberry country, and the Kal-Haven Trail. South Haven is small but it has the right things.
Arrive early enough to hit South Beach in the afternoon — parking fills up fast in summer. Walk the pier to the lighthouse at golden hour. Dinner on Phoenix Street.
The main beach in South Haven — wide, sandy, and reliably clean. The water is cold early summer but warms to genuinely swimmable by late July. There's a gradual drop-off and decent wave action for Lake Michigan. The beach runs about half a mile; the south end toward the channel is calmer for kids, the north end has better swimming. The concession stand near the parking lot is fine for snacks. Arrive before noon in summer to get a spot without walking far from the lot.
Casual harbor-side dining with a patio overlooking the Black River channel — you can watch boats coming in and out of Lake Michigan while you eat. Solid fish tacos, burgers, and lake perch. Not trying to be fancy, but the location is the best in town for atmosphere. Gets busy after 6pm in summer — arrive before or after the rush.
The South Haven South Pier Light is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan — a red cast-iron cylinder at the end of a long concrete pier extending into Lake Michigan. Walk the pier at golden hour and you'll understand why people return every year. The pier is wide and safe, no gear needed. The lighthouse isn't open to tours, but the walk out and back is the point. Best light for photos is 90 minutes before sunset.
South Haven's downtown parking fills by 11am on summer weekends. The city lots off Phoenix Street are closest — arrive early or use street parking on the residential side streets (free, no time limit). For sunset: the pier is the best spot, but the seawall along Dyckman Ave just north of the river mouth is less crowded and gives you the same view without walking the full pier.
Start with breakfast downtown, then head out to blueberry country before the day heats up. The Kal-Haven Trail is flat, paved, and worth doing even a short segment of. Home by mid-afternoon.
Small breakfast and brunch spot on Phoenix Street. The biscuit sandwiches are the move — generous and well-made. Lines form on weekends; arrive by 8:30am or expect to wait. Cash-friendly, counter service, limited indoor seating — plan to eat outside or take it to the pier.
Van Buren County produces more blueberries than any county in America. Dozens of farms offer U-pick from mid-July through August — bring a container, pay by the pound, eat freely while you pick. Crane's Pie Pantry and Ridgewood Farm are reliably good operations. Call ahead or check the farm's website for current-season pick dates before driving out — the window shifts by a few weeks year to year. Outside peak blueberry season, roadside stands carry fresh local produce through September.
A 78-mile paved rail-trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven — flat, well-maintained, and shaded through most of its length. You don't need to do the whole thing: even a 10-mile out-and-back from the South Haven trailhead through farmland and timber sections is worth an hour. Rentals available in South Haven. Paved asphalt — hybrids and road bikes fine, no mountain bike needed. Dogs welcome on leash.
Late July through Labor Day is peak season — busiest, most expensive, water warmest for swimming. The South Haven Blueberry Festival (August — check current dates) is one of the better small-town Michigan festivals: parade, food, live music, and genuinely good blueberry pie. If you want beaches without crowds, come the weekend after Labor Day — water still warm, prices drop, town exhales. Spring (May–June) is quiet and cheap but cold for swimming; good if you're there for the trail.
