Five days in Cancún for families — a day at Xcaret (the best eco-theme park in Mexico), Chichen Itza or Cobá ruins, snorkeling on the reef, a day trip to Isla Mujeres, and proper beach time. This itinerary treats children as capable of engaging with real experiences rather than just splash parks.
Settle in and spend the afternoon at the beach. Kids acclimate to the Caribbean color immediately and it becomes difficult to get them out of the water. The Hotel Zone's public beaches are safe for children — the water is calm on the Hotel Zone side and rougher on the ocean-facing beaches. Check which side your hotel faces.
Xcaret is the best day available in the Cancún area for families. It's an eco-archaeological park built around a series of underground river caves — you swim through the cave system with a life jacket, emerging at the beach. Above ground: a working Mayan village replica, a butterfly pavilion, a sea turtle nursery, a coral reef aquarium, traditional Mayan ball game demonstrations, and a night show with hundreds of performers. Full-day tickets are expensive (~$120/adult, $60/child) and worth every peso. Book online 2+ days in advance to save 20%.
Cobá is the better choice over Chichen Itza for families — you can still climb Nohoch Mul pyramid (the tallest in the Yucatán at 42 meters), the site is in the jungle rather than open sun, and you rent bicycles to get between structures which kids love. The climb is steep with a rope assist and completely doable for children 8+. Less crowded and more adventurous than Chichen Itza. 2 hours from Cancún.
Family snorkeling tours run 2 hours, provide equipment including child-sized masks and life vests, and stop at two or three reef sites in the 5–10 foot depth range. The fish density on the Mesoamerican Reef is exceptional for children — you can count 20+ species in one hour. Book a small-group tour from the Hotel Zone rather than a beach vendor; the smaller boats go to less-trafficked reef sections.
Isla Mujeres works perfectly with children — the ferry crossing is exciting, the golf cart rental is a direct hit with kids of all ages, the beach is calm and safe, and the town is small enough that they don't get overwhelmed. The sea turtle sanctuary (Tortugranja) at the south end is a 30-minute stop with live turtles in the tanks that kids respond well to. The whole island circuit by golf cart takes 45 minutes with stops.
