Beach, Xcaret, and Chichen Itzá. Three days of Caribbean sun plus a full-day UNESCO World Heritage site that most people never make it to.
CUN arrivals are smooth — clear customs, grab a cab or shuttle to the Hotel Zone (30 min), and hit the beach before dark. The Caribbean side of the Hotel Zone has calmer water; the lagoon side has watersports.
The Hotel Zone beaches are public by Mexican law even in front of private resorts. The water is turquoise, warm, and calm on most days (watch for red flags indicating rip currents — they're real here). Best beaches: Playa Delfines (at the end of the zone, least crowded) and the stretch near the Westin.
The Hotel Zone has decent but overpriced food. Take a cab 10 minutes inland to Centro for dinner — El Fish Fritanga, La Habichuela (upscale), or Mercado 28 for a casual taco crawl. Half the price, twice the authenticity.
The Cancún airport has aggressive timeshare reps dressed as official-looking tourist assistance staff. They offer free excursions and gifts in exchange for attending a sales presentation. Walk past them, use the official taxi kiosks or pre-booked shuttles, and don't engage. ADO bus to the Hotel Zone is and perfectly safe.
These eco-parks are the best full-day excursions from Cancún. Xcaret is bigger (theater, river swim, ruins) and better for families; Xel-Há is a snorkel paradise built into a natural inlet. Both are full days. Choose one.
Xcaret is an ecological and cultural theme park built around Mayan ruins and underground river swimming. Highlights: the underground river swim (30 min, bring water shoes), the Papantla flying pole ceremony, and the 2-hour evening show with Mayan history. Buy the Plus pass — it includes everything. Book in advance; it sells out.
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, 2.5 hours from Cancún. Go with a guide — the history is dense and the site is enormous. Leave before 8am to arrive when it opens at 8am and beat the heat and crowds.
The El Castillo pyramid dominates — 91 steps on each of four sides (364 total + the top platform = 365). You can no longer climb it but walking the grounds with a guide covers the Great Ball Court, the Sacred Cenote, the Warriors Temple, and the Observatory. Bring water, sunscreen, and cash for vendors. Book a certified guide through your hotel or Airbnb experience.
Cancún airport is 20 min from the Hotel Zone. Most flights leave mid-afternoon — one last morning on the beach, then head out.
The best free public beach in the Hotel Zone — at the far south end, away from the resort clusters. The waves are slightly bigger here, the beach is wider, and there's a Cancún sign perfect for a photo. Small beach club with chairs and drinks.
La Habichuela in Centro is one of Cancún's finest — Yucatecan cuisine in a garden setting. The cocobichuela (lobster and shrimp in a coconut) is the signature dish. Go for lunch on departure day; the prices are the same as dinner but without the evening tourist premium.
