Beyond the resort: colonial cities, mountain villages, and hidden beaches
One night all-inclusive to decompress from travel. Tomorrow you leave the resort zone and start seeing the real Dominican Republic. Eat, swim, sleep.
English is rare outside of resort zones. Google Translate offline works everywhere with no cell service needed. Dominican Spanish is fast — Duolingo will not prepare you, but Translate will.
The capital is 3 hours west on the autopista. The Zona Colonial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the first European city in the Americas. Cobblestones, 500-year-old cathedrals, and Calle Las Damas.
Columbus Palace, the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor (oldest in the Americas), and the Ozama Fortress. Walk the full Zona in 3 hours on your own or join a guided tour for context.
Drive north into the Cordillera Central. Jarabacoa sits at 1,800 feet — cooler, greener, and completely different from the coast. Rafting the Yaque del Norte is the anchor activity here.
Class III-IV rapids through the largest river in the Caribbean. Half-day trips run most mornings from Jarabacoa town. The gorge scenery is the best inland landscape in the DR.
Drive northeast to Samana — humpback whale watching January-March, El Limon waterfall year-round, and Las Galeras beach, one of the quietest and most beautiful in the Caribbean.
An 52-meter waterfall deep in the jungle above Samana Bay. Horse or hiking access — 45 minutes each way. The pool at the base is a natural swimming hole. Bring a dry bag.
Las Terrenas on the north coast of Samana has a large French and Italian expat community. The beach food is better than anywhere on the east coast. Stay two nights.
Playa Rincon is routinely listed among the best beaches in the Caribbean — accessible only by boat or 4WD. Cayo Levantado is a coconut palm island in the bay. Both require a boat from Samana port.
Drive back east on the autopista through San Pedro de Macoris — one more look at the Dominican countryside before the flight home. The drive takes 3 hours with one stop.
