Five days in Punta Cana for families — a family-friendly all-inclusive, a catamaran to the natural pool (kids love the starfish), an ATV buggy excursion, and proper beach time every day. The Dominican Republic's resort corridor is actually one of the better family all-inclusive destinations in the Caribbean when you pick the right property.
For families, Club Med Punta Cana is the best all-inclusive: the kids' club is genuinely excellent, the circus arts program (trapeze, aerial silks) is a legitimate differentiator, and the water sports include sailing lessons and kayaking at no additional cost. Barceló Bávaro Palace is the mid-range alternative with a strong waterpark section and multiple pools by age group. Avoid the smaller/cheaper properties for families — the amenity gap is significant.
The natural pool excursion is the best family excursion in Punta Cana — a lagoon inside a barrier reef where the water is knee-deep and the sandy bottom is covered with starfish. Children wade through shallow water picking up (and returning) starfish while adults snorkel the reef edge nearby. The family catamaran operators make this a 4-hour trip with lunch and an open soft drink bar. $50–70/adult, $30–40/child.
Family buggy excursions seat two adults and one child per vehicle — the two-seater buggy format is better for families than ATVs. The excursion covers jungle trail, a Dominican village visit, and ends at a cenote swim. Most operators have minimum age 4 for the buggy passenger seat. The cenote swim is accessible to all ages with life jackets provided.
Scape Park in Cap Cana has a zip line circuit above the forest canopy (minimum age 8, minimum weight 50 lbs) plus the Indigenous Eyes lagoons for swimming. The combination of zip lining in the morning and cenote swimming in the afternoon makes for an excellent full-day family excursion. Entry packages run $75–120/adult, $50–80/child.
Last morning. Bávaro Beach in the morning before the excursion crowd arrives — the beach is uncrowded before 9am and the water is the clearest it will be all day. Reserve the all-inclusive beachside restaurant for a final lunch before the airport transfer.
