Three days for active travelers who want to use Punta Cana as a base for the Dominican Republic's outdoor highlights — ATV jungle excursions, the El Limón waterfall in Samaná province, and humpback whale watching from Samaná Bay (January–March). The beach and all-inclusive are here when you want them, but this itinerary proves the DR offers more than a lounge chair.
The interior of the Bávaro / Punta Cana peninsula has well-established ATV trail networks through subtropical vegetation, past Dominican villages, and to a natural cenote swim. Full-day excursions run 4 hours with guide, equipment, and cenote entry included — $80–120 per person. Buggies (two-seater) are easier for couples than solo ATVs. Expect to get dirty. The cenote at the end is worth the mud.
El Limón is a 52-meter cascade in the Cordillera Samaná mountain range — reached by a 45-minute horseback ride through humid tropical forest, followed by a 30-minute hike to the base pool. The waterfall feeds a swimming hole at the base that's accessible and cold. Samaná province is 3 hours from Punta Cana (or accessible by Samaná Airport if you want to overnight). The combined drive + horseback + hike is a full day that showcases a completely different side of the DR.

Samaná Bay is one of the most important humpback whale breeding and calving grounds in the North Atlantic — between January and March, an estimated 80% of the Atlantic humpback population passes through. Whale watching boats operate from the town of Santa Bárbara de Samaná. Tours run 3–4 hours, cost $50–80 per person, and regularly put guests within 50 feet of 40-ton whales breaching and slapping the surface. Outside January–March, this block is not applicable — substitute a sport fishing or kiteboarding excursion instead.
