Beach, Saona Island catamaran, Altos de Chavón, and one full day of doing absolutely nothing. The complete Punta Cana formula.
PUJ is one of the easiest Caribbean arrivals — customs is fast, the transfer to Bávaro Beach takes 30 min, and you are in the sand within 90 minutes of landing.
The Bávaro stretch is one of the longest continuous white sand beaches in the Caribbean — 20+ miles of coconut palms, turquoise water, and warm, calm surf. Eastern-facing beaches here have calmer water than south-facing resorts. Get in the water within the first hour of arrival.
Most guests spend all 5 days at the pool. Book Saona Island and Altos de Chavón on days 2 and 3, then use the back half for pure beach recovery. Activity desks at every resort fill fast in peak season.
The best day trip in the Dominican Republic. A 90-minute catamaran to a national park island with no hotels and near-perfect Caribbean conditions.
The catamaran stops at a natural shallow-water pool (waist-deep, Caribbean-flat, full of starfish) before docking at Mano Juan village on Saona Island. The beach is uninhabited national park — white sand, coconut palms, and the clearest water in the DR. Beachside buffet lunch usually included. Book through your resort; departs from Bayahibe, about 90 min from Punta Cana.
A half-day cultural day trip to a replica 16th-century Mediterranean village perched above the Chavón River. Built by a Gulf+Western set designer in 1976; implausibly charming.
A stone-cobbled replica 16th-century Mediterranean village on a cliff above the Chavón River at Casa de Campo resort. 90 minutes from Punta Cana. The outdoor amphitheater seats 5,000; the Regional Museum of Archaeology has a serious Taíno collection; the Church of St. Stanislaus is genuinely beautiful. Most tour operators run a half-day Altos plus river cruise combo.
After two activity days, this is the one where you do nothing. Pool, beach, spa.
Most Punta Cana resorts sit on sandy-bottom beach without reef. The best reef snorkeling is via a half-day catamaran snorkel tour booked through your resort activity desk. Gear typically included in all-inclusive. Alternatively, Playa Catalina near La Romana has good reef accessible from the beach.
Brugal and Barceló are the Dominican national rums — both exceptional and $12–18 at the airport duty-free. Mamajuana (rum infused with tree bark, honey, and red wine) is the local digestif. Buy it bottled, not the raw bark version. One bottle per person duty-free into the US.
PUJ is 15 minutes from Bávaro Beach. Most flights depart afternoon. One last swim.
The Bávaro strip is 20 miles long — walk as far as you want in either direction. Check out by noon, transfer to PUJ by 1:30pm for afternoon flights.
