Put-in-Bay

Put-in-Bay is a small village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, reached by ferry from Port Clinton or Sandusky. It's Ohio's closest equivalent to a Caribbean island getaway — surrounded by freshwater, oriented entirely around boats, golf carts (the island's primary ground transport), and a summer social scene that punches far above the island's 300 permanent residents. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial dominates the skyline — a 352-foot Doric column commemorating Oliver Hazard Perry's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. The monument offers an elevator ride to the observation deck and some of the best views over Lake Erie anywhere. Crystal Cave, the world's largest known geode, is a walk-in attraction beneath the Heineman Winery that's genuinely surprising — walls of celestite crystals in a cave the size of a large living room. The island bar scene on Delaware Avenue is legendary in Ohio — Mossbacks, the Roundhouse, and a dozen more run from afternoon until late. The crowds thin sharply after Labor Day and the ferry schedule reduces accordingly; shoulder season (May, September) offers the island at its most pleasant without the summer crush. The ferry from Sandusky or Port Clinton takes 20 minutes. Kelleys Island is a quieter, less party-oriented neighbor island accessible from the same ferry terminals.
