A full weekend on South Bass Island — hit the bars on Delaware Ave, rent a golf cart, catch a sunset, and squeeze in a cave tour.
The ferry ride sets the mood. Once you dock, rent a golf cart immediately — they sell out fast on summer weekends. Your cart is your car for the whole trip.
The island has no traffic lights and everyone uses golf carts. Rent from Tipper's, De's, or any of the dozen rental shops on Delaware Ave. Electric carts are quieter; gas carts have more range. ~$75–100 for a half day.
Mr. Ed's is the island's most iconic dive — a no-frills lakeside bar with a parrot (at various points in its history), cheap buckets of beer, and the kind of crowd that ranges from Harley riders to grandparents on pontoon boat excursions. The food is bar food and it's fine. The appeal is the vibe: open-air, loud, and unapologetically itself. Located on the western side of the island near the marina approach.
Natural cave discovered by Commodore Perry in 1813, now a 30-min guided tour. Good for a mid-afternoon stop before the bar scene starts. The gem mining sluice is a hit with kids.
The best sit-down dinner on the island. Get a table on the porch if you can. Known for their smash burgers and the goat cheese dip. Slightly quieter than the Delaware Ave bars — good for a real meal before the evening.
The Put-in-Bay bar scene is the whole point for many visitors. Start at The Round House Bar (oldest bar on the island), then Beer Barrel Saloon (world's longest bar), then Mist nightclub if you're staying late. Pace yourself — it's a small island.
Saturday on Put-in-Bay is chaotic. Arriving Friday evening means you get the golf carts, the restaurant seats, and the bar scene before the Saturday day-trippers flood in. Leave Sunday morning before 10am if you want a seat on the ferry without a 90-minute wait.
The Jet Express is the fastest option — 22 minutes, no car needed, runs frequently in summer. Book round-trip online. Leaves from the Port Clinton waterfront. Arrive 20 min early on peak weekends.
Quieter morning, scenic loop around the island, then catch the late afternoon ferry back. The western shore has the best sunset views.
The western tip of the island has the best Lake Erie views and a small beach. Great for morning coffee and a walk. The campground here books months in advance but day use is free.
Perched over the water with a dock view — the best lunch spot on the island. Get the perch sandwich (Lake Erie perch is a regional staple). Can get loud but the view makes up for it.
The 352-ft Doric column is the dominant landmark on the island. The observation deck (elevator to the top) gives a clear view of the lake on all sides. Worth the $7 entry. The monument commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie, 1813.
End-of-weekend ferries can back up 60–90 minutes on Sunday afternoon. Buy your return ticket when you buy the outbound, and get to the dock 30 minutes early. The Miller Ferry from Catawba Point is often less crowded than the Jet Express on Sunday.
