The North Shore Alvar is one of only a handful of alvar ecosystems in North America — flat, exposed limestone bedrock with shallow soil that supports a globally rare plant community including orchids, wild thyme, and specialized grasses. The North Pond State Nature Preserve protects the western end of the island and the alvar extends along the shoreline from here. No formal trail infrastructure — you walk the rock shelf itself. Best in late May and June when the wildflowers bloom. Bring water and watch for thin footing near the lake edge.
The main gathering spot in the village center. Known for perch, walleye, and cold beer on the patio. Nothing fancy — exactly what you want after a day outdoors. Opens at 11am.
The largest easily accessible glacial grooves in the world — carved by glaciers 18,000 years ago. The grooves are 400 ft long, 35 ft wide, and 10 ft deep. Free, takes about 20 minutes, genuinely impressive. On the north shore.
No ATM on the island — bring cash. Sun protection is non-negotiable (open water exposure). The ferry schedule is fixed; missing the last boat means finding accommodation. Bring a water bottle — the one restaurant can get slammed at lunch. A small cooler keeps drinks cold for the beach section.
The Kelleys Island Ferry runs from Marblehead (not Port Clinton). Runs year-round, 20-minute crossing. You can bring your car but a bike or golf cart rental on the island is easier. Check the seasonal schedule — frequency drops in fall.
