San Juan

San Juan is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the US. Old San Juan has 16th-century Spanish forts, cobblestone streets dyed blue with copper slag, and some of the best rum bars in the hemisphere. Condado and Isla Verde have the modern hotels and beach scene. The food has gotten serious — this is not resort buffet territory anymore.

Fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) — major hub with direct flights from most US cities. No passport needed for US citizens. Uber works and is cheap.
