Three days: boutique hotel in Old San Juan, rooftop dinners, bioluminescent bay night tour, and a morning at the beach without the crowds.
Check in, walk the old city walls at dusk, watch the sun go down from the Ballajá park lawn above El Morro. Every couple does this. It works.
The fine dining room at the Vanderbilt hotel in Condado — the most technically accomplished kitchen in San Juan. The tasting menu is 7 courses and worth it for a special dinner. Reserve weeks ahead in high season.
Old San Juan becomes a different place when cruise ships dock — can be 5,000+ additional tourists before noon. Check the Port Authority schedule online before your trip. Tuesday–Thursday are usually the heaviest cruise days. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot.
A 17th-century Carmelite convent converted into a 58-room boutique hotel. The courtyard, rooftop terrace, and historic bones make it unlike anything else in the city. Rates $250–450/night. Book a courtyard-view room.
Puerto Rico has three bio bays — Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the most accessible from San Juan (45 min drive). The water glows blue-green when disturbed — single-celled dinoflagellates. Kayak tours go out after dark. No phones needed; just put your hand in the water. $45–65/person.
You don't need a car in Old San Juan but you do for El Yunque and the bio bay. Rent for just the day(s) you need — Budget and Hertz are at the airport. Uber to Fajardo is also an option and avoids parking.

El Yunque in the morning, back for a nap, then a final dinner at a rooftop spot in Old San Juan before a late flight home.
The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system. 45 minutes from Old San Juan. La Mina Trail to the waterfall is the standard hike — about 90 minutes round trip, not strenuous. Go before noon before afternoon clouds roll in and block the views.
Creative fine dining in Old San Juan with a tasting menu that changes frequently. The wine list is strong for a Caribbean city. Rooftop seating is the right call for a last dinner.
