Four days built around the rainforest, bio bay, surfing on the northwest coast, and the forts — the Puerto Rico beyond the resort zone.
Check in, walk the city walls, and get your bearings. Grab dinner in Old San Juan and sleep early — tomorrow's a full day in the rainforest.
Renting a car unlocks the whole island. The highway system is good and driving is on the right. Budget $40–60/day. Parking in Old San Juan is brutal — stay in a hotel with parking or park outside and walk in.
Long day but worth it — leave at 7 AM, spend the morning in the rainforest, afternoon rest back in San Juan, then the bio bay tour after dark.
Leave by 7 AM to beat the heat and the crowds. La Mina Trail is 45 minutes of moderate hiking to a decent waterfall. Combine with Yokahú Tower for views over the rainforest canopy. Bring water, wear shoes you can get wet.
After dinner, head to Laguna Grande for the bioluminescent bay tour. Book the 8:30 PM slot. The glow is stronger on moonless nights — check the lunar calendar when planning.
Early start for the drive to Rincón. The mountain route (Hwy 10 north through Arecibo) is more scenic than the toll road. Surf lesson in the morning, lunch at the beach, head back before dark.
Rincón on the northwest coast is a 2.5-hour drive and Puerto Rico's surf capital. Lessons are available for beginners at Domes Beach or Maria's Beach. The drive through the mountains is good. Go on a Wednesday or Thursday to avoid weekend crowds.
Puerto Rico's power grid is still vulnerable — carrying a portable charger and having a hotel with a generator matters if you go June–November. High season (Dec–April) has none of these concerns. The island is fully worth visiting in shoulder season but know the risk.
Last day — both forts in the morning, walk the city walls, have a final lunch at La Mallorca. The blue streets look different after you've spent a few days here.
Cash-only Puerto Rican home cooking in Old San Juan — the kind of place that's been there forever and doesn't care about Yelp. The pernil (roast pork) and tostones are the move. A full meal runs $15–20.
