Michigan, United States
Holland, Michigan earns its name — this isn't a theme park approximation of the Netherlands, it's a genuine Dutch-American settlement that's been tending tulip beds and maintaining a working windmill since the 1800s. Tulip Time in May draws 500,000 visitors for klompen dancing, street scrubbing ceremonies, and miles of blooming bulbs. Outside festival season, Holland is a relaxed lakeside town with a walkable downtown, strong coffee culture, excellent craft beer at New Holland Brewing, and quick access to Lake Michigan beaches at Holland State Park. The downtown is compact, independent, and refreshingly un-chainified. If you come in summer, the beach scene rivals anything on the Michigan shore.

Holland is a 2.5-hour drive from Chicago and Detroit. Fly into Gerald R. Ford International (GRR) in Grand Rapids (45 min north) or Kalamazoo/Battle Creek (BTL, 45 min east). A car is essential — Holland is navigable on foot downtown but the state park and outlying attractions require driving.
