Four days for families covering Windmill Island Gardens, Dutch Village, Holland State Park beach days, Saugatuck dune rides, and Veldheer Tulip Farm. Genuinely educational without feeling forced — kids end up knowing more about the Netherlands than their teachers.
Holland rewards arrivals with immediate visual payoff — the tulip beds and windmill are right in the heart of the city. Hit Windmill Island first afternoon if you arrive before 5pm.
The working 18th-century windmill is a genuine hit with kids — the machinery is fascinating and the guides explain how it works in terms kids actually follow. There's also a carousel on the grounds. The tulip gardens are the backdrop and the whole thing is surprisingly manageable for family logistics.
Boatwerks is on Lake Macatawa with a massive outdoor deck, solid family menu (fish tacos, burgers, pizza), and a waterfront view that keeps kids occupied. Docking available if you have a boat. It's the closest thing Holland has to a classic lakeside dining experience.
Today is maximum kid-engagement: a Dutch heritage theme park in the morning, Lake Michigan beach in the afternoon. Pack sunscreen and a change of clothes.
Dutch Village has been running since 1952 and the attractions are built for exactly this age range — train rides, canal boat rides, animal barn, klompen dancing demo, pottery painting, and Dutch folk performances. The poffertjes (mini Dutch pancakes with powdered sugar) are the signature snack and kids lose their minds over them. Open May through October only.
Big Lake Brewing is the family-friendly craft beer option — proper kids menu, relaxed taproom with plenty of space, and the outdoor area is forgiving of high-energy small humans. The beer is solid for adults.
Day three diversifies the experience — Veldheer Tulip Farm for more Dutch heritage and the wooden shoe demo, then a quick trip to Saugatuck for the dune schooner rides.
Coral Gables has been feeding Saugatuck visitors since 1934 — burgers, perch, fish sandwiches, and a porch overlooking the harbor. Classic Michigan summer food done well. Ask if the perch is on.
The wooden shoe carving demo at De Klomp factory is one of those things kids remember — machine carves a rough blank from a log in 30 seconds, then hand finishing. They can buy custom shoes with names carved in. The tulip farm display fields are extensive and the bulk bulb shop has good pricing if you want to plant at home.
Last day is decompression. Mini golf and ice cream are Holland summer institutions. Keep it loose.
Holland has a classic putt-putt facility that's been around for decades. If you want something more scenic, the mini golf in Saugatuck overlooks the Kalamazoo River. Either works for a last-morning activity before checkout.
Captain Sundae on the north side of Holland is an institution — soft-serve, dipped cones, and sundaes that have been making kids happy since 1965. It's exactly what a family trip exit stop should be. Seasonal (typically April–September). Confirm they're open and check if they still take cash only.
