Five days using Holland as a base to explore the full West Michigan lakeshore — Saugatuck art scene, Oval Beach, South Haven lighthouse, Blue Star Highway farm stands, and the craft beer corridor from New Holland to Bell's in Kalamazoo.
Five days on the West Michigan lakeshore — Holland as your base for the first two days, then day-tripping south toward Saugatuck and South Haven before pushing to Kalamazoo for the exit. Day one covers the Holland essentials.
Get the windmill visit done on arrival afternoon. Then walk Eighth Street end-to-end — it's an unusually good downtown strip with independent shops, no chains, and good people-watching in season. De Boer's is the place for stroopwafels and Gouda.
Worth the 20-minute drive south on arrival night — Salt of the Earth sources from West Michigan farms and the menu changes with availability. Wood-fired dishes are the strength. Fennville is also apple and wine country — check if Virtue Cider is open for a pre-dinner drink.
Beach morning, brewery afternoon. This is peak Holland.
Walk the pier to Big Red at sunrise or early morning, then stake out a beach spot. Lake Michigan in July and August is as good as any beach in the Midwest — clear water, wide sand, reliable summer sun. The south side of the channel is typically less crowded.
New Holland makes both beer and spirits at scale. Dragon's Milk is the flagship bourbon barrel stout — rich, complex, 11% ABV. The spirits line (Knickerbocker Gin, hops whiskey) is underrated. Check newhollandbrew.com for Dragon's Milk Reserve release dates if you're a stout collector.
Saugatuck deserves a full day. This is Michigan's art town — serious galleries alongside dune scenery and one of the best beaches in the Midwest.
Oval Beach gets national rankings regularly — fine sand, clear water, tall dunes behind it. The Mt. Baldhead dune climb is free and gives a view over the harbor and lake worth every step. Oval Beach parking fills by 10am on summer weekends — arrive early or take the water taxi from downtown Saugatuck ($5/person).
Farm-forward menu, excellent fish, good wine. Lower-key than the resort restaurants but higher quality. The outdoor seating is the best in town. No reservations — arrive early.
South Haven is 30 minutes south of Holland and has one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan. The harbor is active and the downtown has good food and farm markets.
The South Haven pier walk to the lighthouse is about a quarter mile over the water. The lighthouse is bright red against blue sky and Lake Michigan — exactly what Great Lakes photography looks like. Early morning light hits the pier perfectly.
Waterfront location on the Black River, good fish menu, casual atmosphere. The whitefish sandwich is a Michigan classic done right.
Last day pushes 45 minutes east to Kalamazoo — home of Bell's Brewery and the strongest craft beer scene in Michigan outside Grand Rapids. Morning at Bell's, lunch downtown, then home.
Bell's is Michigan's most famous craft brewery and the Eccentric Cafe is the flagship taproom. Two Hearted Ale is the flagship IPA — consistently excellent, named for the Hemingway story set on the Two-Hearted River. Oberon (hefeweizen) is a Michigan summer ritual. The back bar has more rotating taps than most breweries have total. The beer garden opens in warm weather.
If heading toward Chicago, take Blue Star Highway (US-31 business/M-89 corridor) instead of US-131 south. It runs through Saugatuck, Douglas, South Haven, and Benton Harbor with farm stands, orchard views, and lake glimpses the whole way. South Haven is a natural coffee stop. Add 45 minutes and worth it every time.
